Welcome to the Clifton Music Service newsletter

Clifton Music Service is the Diocesan Music Service for the Clifton Diocese. We are based at Clifton Cathedral. This newsletter contains news about diocesan events. The focus is on interactivity - we want to hear what you're doing, what you're thinking and we want to find out how we can help you, as well as giving you the chance to take part.

You are receiving this newsletter either because you have expressed an interest in music in the Diocese, because you are on one of our lists of contacts or because we know you!

If this is the first newsletter you have received, welcome along!

If you no longer wish to receive this newsletter, please contact us and we'll take you off our mailing list.

Diocesan Choir Celebrations in the coming months

Stained glassThere are lots of events for Diocesan musicians over the coming months.

More details on each in the coming weeks and months

14th February: Diocesan Celebration of Marriage A Mass, on Valentine's Day, to celebrate special anniversaries for couples from around the diocese. But it is also a chance for anyone - married, widowed or single - to celebrate the existence and joys of this special sacrament. Always a joyous celebration led by Bishop Declan. Mass in Clifton Cathedral, at 12 o'clock with a set-up and rehearsal from 11.15. For details and to register click here

21st February: Diocesan Rite of Election Another great annual event, when candidates from around the Diocese who are to be baptised/confirmed/received at Easter are welcomed by the Bishop, and make their commitment to the faith. There is quite a bit of music in this celebration - you may well find something new which you can take back to your parish! The celebration takes place in Clifton Cathedral at 11am, with set-up and rehearsal from 10.15 For details, and to register, click here

1st April: Chrism Mass One of the Diocesan highlights of the year, this is the Mass in the Cathedral during which the Bishop consecrates the oils for use in parishes in the coming year. During the Mass the priests and deacons from around the Diocese re-dedicate themselves to their service to their people. This year's Chrism Mass is on 1st April, and there will be lots of exciting music. More below...

Chrism Mass - rehearsal

Because the Chrism Mass takes such a high profile in our year's music-making, we hold rehearsals before the day. This year, the main rehearsal will be in the Cathedral on 29th March, in the afternoon.

Anybody intending to sing in the Mass is asked to attend at least one rehearsal beforehand, preferably (this year) the one which will be held at the Cathedral on 29th March. We may also be able to arrange other rehearsals around the Diocese.

Music at the Chrism Mass this year will include the Mass of St Paul the Apostle, a new gathering song for the entrance procession, a large-scale arrangement (for brass, flute and four-part choir) of Amazing Grace and much more.

The Cathedral is always packed for the Chrism Mass, and your best view will be from the choir seats! So come and join us - and bring your friends.

For more details, and to register your interest, visit our website here.

Other upcoming opportunities

Later in the summer there will be a number of further opportunities for singing with the Diocesan Choir. These include the Glastonbury Pilgrimage on 12th July (this year's theme is Mary, Mother of the Family and the music is suitably more family-orientated), the Clifton Hours in June and an Advent Celebration at the end of the year.

Please keep an eye on the website, where we will post any further opportunities - as well as updating details for the current celebrations. We'll also post information to our Twitter feed.

Clifton Cathedral Music Group

The Music Group at Clifton Cathedral is always open to new members. No singing or musical experience is required, although there are also openings for soloists, instrumentalists, leaders and so on.

The Group meets to rehearse in the Cathedral House (next to the Cathedral itself) on Thursday evenings, for an hour. It then sings at the 9.30 Mass each Sunday morning, which is the Cathedral Parish Family Mass. The repertoire covers a full range of modern (and some more traditional) Catholic Music; coming along and singing with the group for even a short time may open your eyes to some of the music and techniques which you can take back to your parish.

If you want to come and join the Music Group, please get in touch with Director Martin Le Poidevin (who also directs the Diocesan Choir).

Find out more about the Music Group here.

Music for Lent and Easter

Don't forget that you can buy and download music from our website. We're constantly updating the Shop page with new music from our team of musicians at the cathedral and around the Diocese, and there are already several pieces for the rest of the Easter season and the ordinary time beyond.

All the music will be sent via email in .pdf format (although hard print copies are available if you wish). Make it one of the places you check for all your music needs for a Sunday morning and beyond.

Do you have any messages?

This newsletter is an excellent way of staying in touch with the musicians from around the Diocese. If you need anything - an organist, a piece of music, any ideas or help - then email martin@cliftonms.com or Diocesan Choir co-ordinator Lesley Lee (lesley@cliftonms.com) and we'll include you in a future issue.

Clifton Music Service website

The Clifton Music Service website at cliftonms.com has some great resources for you to use, plus more information about the Music Service, which is updated on a regular basis with news of Diocesan Music and cathedral services.

There is also a section with music which has been written by some of our Diocesan musicians.

Give us some idea of what you want to see on it (for instance, a Mass/Service planner is in development, and we hope to get some forums going soon) and we'll do our best to implement them.

Oh, and we've also got a Twitter account. Follow us at @cliftonmusic. And a Facebook page - Clifton-Music-Service/.

You are receiving this newsletter because you are on our (admittedly very old) mailing list.

Please let us know if you don't wish to receive the newsletter any more, by clicking here.

If you are having trouble reading this newsletter, you can go online to read it at cliftonms.com/newsletters/newsletter12.htm.

Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone you think might be interested in it, and if you think there's someone who should be getting it regularly let us know and we'll add them to the list. An automated subscription system is in the pipeline!
