Cathedral Choral Scholarships & Exhibitions

Clifton scholars and exhibitioners have gone on to sing with Tenebrae, Genesis Sixteen, The Sixteen and other major cathedrals across the country.

Information for candidates

The Scholarships and Exhibitions (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) are available at the Cathedral Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Clifton (Clifton Cathedral) and are open to those in full time education or others of the age up to 25. You don’t need to be studying Music or be a Roman Catholic to sing with the Cathedral Choir.

There are up to four scholarships and four exhibitions are available at any one time. The awards are renewable annually (normally for a maximum of three years). Exhibitioners are appointed from the Scholars as they gain experience and skills with an appropriate uplift in the Award given or, if this is demonstrable, can be immediately awarded.

Application process

Places will usually be filled at the beginning of the academic year. Alternatively, if there is a vacancy, you can join at the beginning of a term. The audition will consist of singing two contrasting prepared pieces, some unprepared sight reading and ear tests, followed by an interview at which the Choral Director and the Director of Music will be present.

Duties

The Scholar/Exhibitioner will be required to attend Friday evening rehearsals from 7pm to 9pm and Sunday morning rehearsals from 10.30 am followed by Solemn Mass at 11.15am. Occasional cantored (solo) 6pm Masses are also expected.

Attendance is also required for at least six of twelve Liturgies and associated rehearsals across the year and at other services as agreed. Broadcasts and recordings where outside the usual calendar of worship are separately paid.

Remuneration

The Cathedral is offering a scholarship grant award of up to £1110 per Choral Scholar for a period of one year. This will be given in three instalments of up to £370 paid in December, April and July.

The Cathedral is offering a grant award of up to £1800 per Exhibitioner for a period of one year. This is given at the same time as for the Scholars.

Details of conditions of appointment

We operate with the usual terms for such a role in a Cathedral. The full terms of the agreement can be sent on request.
